Tweaking Open Source TN5250j

IBMSystemsMag.com just published my latest article titled “Tweaking Open Source TN5250j”.  The open source and free TN5250j emulator is what I use 99% of the time for all of my green screen access to the various IBM i machines I connect to.  This article shows how to make a modification to the TN5250j code base [...]

The Apple Ate The Penguin – happy ending?

Well, I did it.  I determined that purchasing an Apple Macbook Pro was the approach I should take to meet my personal/business computing needs at my workstation.  What drove me to this decision?  Well, I just can’t stand it when an OS screws me over without giving me recourse.  That was the case a few [...]

LinuxDesktop4i mailing list

Since becoming a daily user of Linux on my desktop over a year ago, I have been taking notice of who else also uses either Linux of OSX for their desktop.  I was pleasantly surprised that there are a lot of people out there that have dabbled in Linux desktops or have completely embraced them. [...]

Google Wave

Google is at it again.  They have now introduced a new platform collaboration tool titled “Google Wave”.  I use a lot of Google tooling (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs) all of which I am always impressed with the ground made and the fact that I get it for little cost (cost is not always money, [...]

Your IDE in the browser? It’s happening.

I have tried browser based IDEs and while the idea is cool I am still not convinced – though I am thoroughly intrigued.
Here is the latest one I have seen from none other than Mozilla Labs and is titled “Bespin”: http://labs.mozilla.com/projects/bespin/
The first experience I had with this concept was Eclifox from IBM Alpha works: http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/eclifox
I [...]

Mono y MonoDevelop

Ok, so that was a lame attempt at a Spanish statement, but what can you expect from a guy that got a C in that highschool class ;-)
Every once in awhile I run across individuals that are head over heals for Microsoft’s development tools, which aren’t too shabby – now if I could only run [...]

Ernie Ball ditches Microsoft for all open source

What makes the title of this blog entry interesting is that this happened in 2003 – nearly 6 years ago!  Imagine how much farther along the Linux/open source community is by now and how much easier it is to embrace everything!
Here’s the article: http://news.cnet.com/2008-1082_3-5065859.html
Does Microsoft hold your little beating heart and squeeze it whenever [...]

JSEU (Java Source Entry Utility … for RPG)

So it never ceases to absolutely amaze me what is out there in open source land.  For example, a gentleman recently commented on my blog entry concerning RPG Next Gen being a possible replacement for the now more-complicated-to-obtain RDi, and he (Mario) brought about another GUI RPG editor I haven’t even heard of.  The free [...]

EBCDIC to ASCII in Linux

Every so often I have customers send me their code so I can help them determine what might be wrong with something.  What sometimes happens is they download the code via FTP and the EBCDIC to ASCII conversion doesn’t take place.  This leaves me with a text file of gobble-d-gook (technical term, I know).  So [...]

Hmmm… Glad I am running Ubuntu(Linux)

Here is some news just now hitting /. (Slashdot.com for the layperson).
Oops! Missed One Fix — Windows Attacks Under Way
I can’t help but wonder if Linux might be in the same boat once it has caught on more and is a popular desktop for businesses.  I don’t know if Linux has the potential to suffer [...]
